TAKEO KOSUGI

Takeo KOSUGI is one of the named partners of Matsuo & Kosugi and has been with the firm almost since its inception. Currently, Kosugi is a senior counsel of Matsuo & Kosugi.

Prior to joining M&K, Kosugi first worked as a court judge in Japan where, for six years, he presided over a variety of civil, criminal and family law matters. After six years of sitting on the Osaka and Kushiro district courts, Kosugi made the decision to enter private practice.

After leaving the judiciary, Kosugi then went on to complete his LLM at Harvard Law School where he was also invited to study for an additional year as a visiting scholar in the East Asian Studies program. Upon completion of his studies at Harvard, Kosugi interned at a law firm in Paris and Milbank LLP in New York before returning to Japan and joining the firm that eventually became Matsuo & Kosugi. Based on these experiences, Kosugi has amassed extensive experience in a variety of Japanese, foreign and international legal fields, such as international arbitrations, domestic and international lawsuits, bankruptcy cases, cross-border litigations and cross-border insolvency cases. In addition, Kosugi routinely handles corporate legal issues such as M&As, international business transactions and the drafting of various contracts based on his experiences of having been a trustee in corporate reorganization cases as well as having acted as an outside director and outside corporate auditor for various companies.

As the chairman of LAWASIA and a director of the International Civil and Commercial Law Centre Foundation, Kosugi has built and maintained a close network of lawyers and various organizations in China and other Asian countries.
